Even Reducto can't find anything to hate about the eeepc (triple e-pc? E^3-pc? Not exactly snappy for a name). And neither can I. It was purely by chance I found out about it, after convincing my other half she needed a new laptop - not a hard task as her Dell is both slow as balls and heavy as dark matter - I had set my mind to convincing her to buy a Macbook. However, whilst she was shopping online she came across the eeepc and fell in love. There was squealing over it's size, the fact in came in different colours and the low price. Then she asked what I thought.I umm'd and ahh'd over the specs, the teensy weens- I'VE GOT A SHRINK GUN! small flash HDD, I was pretty impressed. Factor in that the gf does not involve herself in playing silly games where you get to be a beautiful Elf princess, focuses more on the important things, like grading her kid's book reports and you can see she is the target market.
She doesn't care about operating systems, either. I use Linux so she figured that if she had any problems she could come to me about them. Indeed the only problems we had on its first night with us was a) Getting it to connect to our wireless network with its hidden SSID, b) Accessing the music folder on my computer (two clicks, tops?) c) Sharing my printer (an act of sanity on my part as previous to this she would wrestle her old PoS printer onto a dining chair whenever she wanted to print something) (p.s. one click this time) and d) Folder sharing across the network (a bit more of a fiddle, but I went with Samba rather than NFS sharing and everything worked fine.
The screen is nice and bright, with the windows a good size, the speakers are okay, certainly they are okay for quiet music and the keyboard is pretty okay if you have girlish hands and a certain mental adaptability.
I'm definitely in the market to get one for uni, as at less than a kilo, I'd barely notice it in my bag and it would be rather handy for note-taking. as well as browsing 4chan at lunch. Never seen a furry before? Here you go...
